Glory Days Grill® Braces for Goals

WE WANT WINGS!

WASHINGTON, (October 13, 2011) – Much to the delight of fans and players, this season Glory Days Grill is repeating their popular promotion, “WE WANT WINGS!” with the Washington Capitals Hockey Team where ticketed fans receive free chicken wings within seven days after the team scores five or more goals during a home game.

This is the fourth-consecutive year that Glory Days Grill has teamed up with the Caps to offer this outrageous promotion.  Such a campaign might seem innocuous enough, but last year the Capitals beat the opposing netminder five or more times in 11 games, which accounted for 27% of all the home games played at Verizon Center.

Based in Fairfax, VA, this Mid-Atlantic casual dining restaurant chain gave away more than 70,000 of their award-winning wings during the 2010-2011 hockey season.  One sports blog humorously ran a story with the headline, “Glory Days is definitely going out of business,” because of the massive amount of redemptions.  In addition, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin quipped, “I just wanted to give the fans free chicken wings,” when interviewed after scoring the team’s fifth goal during a shootout in one of those games.

In the process, the exciting team and the busy regional restaurant with 20 locations have been collectively responsible for inspiring what will probably go down as one of the loudest, best-known chants in sports marketing history with passionate fans screaming, “WE WANT WINGS!” following any home game’s fourth goal.

This year’s preseason expectations of a balanced offensive attack and some key offseason acquisitions have added to an even higher degree of fan awareness of this unique promotion and has Glory Days’ managers preparing for big crowds all season long.

“We’re looking forward to serving up even more free wings this year,” says Richard Danker, one of the Glory Days founders and company vice president.  “We’re huge sports fans ourselves and we want to see the Capitals bring the Stanley Cup to where we all know it should be, the Greater Washington, D.C. area.”

“The Glory Days Grill “WE WANT WINGS” promotion has become one of our most popular in-game elements.  Each time the Caps reach 4 goals, fans immediately break into the “We Want Wings!” chant.  When the team delivers the fifth goal, it provides a value-added emotional element to our followers that can’t be measured.  This type of partnership is exactly what we look for when finding ways to connect sponsors with fans in a meaningful and valuable way,” says Joe Dupriest, vice president and chief marketing officer, Washington Capitals.
